År 1886 förliser lord och lady Claytons skepp på den afrikanska västkusten. Paret klarar sig och Alice föder en son. Men snart dör Alice och hennes make faller offer för en grupp apors nyfikenhet. Sonen tas om hand av en aphona som mist sitt eget barn. Barnet växer upp bland aporna och blir en i flocken. Men hans djungelvanor leder till vissa problem när han senare försöker anpassa sig till civilisationen.
